Monte Carlo study of Spinodal Decomposition

Spinodal decomposition is a fast phase separation process which happens at the limit of metastability. The process depends on the kinetics of the underlying mechanisms: diffusive systems will phase separate slower than systems without conservation laws, for example. The project will involve preparing a classical spin system in a metastable state, and pushing it over to the stable state, while observing its dynamics.

The work to be carried out in this project will include considerable amount of computer work, programming as well as analysis. Completion of and a good grade from the Phys 334 (Statistical Physics) course is a requirement. The student must discuss the project with me before applying for assignment.
