Phys 124 - Spring
Second Simulation Homework

Consider the problem in the First Simulation Homework. Inhabitants on the planet have discovered that an alien
spacecraft is about the land. Just at the instant the spacecraft is at the height of 100m, they fire a
projectile with a mass 10Kg and an initial velocity of 50m/s from the surface of the planet a distance 100m
from the landing point. Assume that the spacecraft is approaching with the parameters you found in the First
Simulation Homework. Besides the gravitational force, The projectile is under the effect of a retarding
(frictional) force of magnitude Ff=αv where v is the speed of the projectile, and
α=1.0 N/(m/s). This retarding force is in opposite direction to the velocity. Find the angle θ
with which the projectile must be fired so that it hits the spacecraft. (If the positions of the spacecraft
and the projectile are within 1m, consider that a hit.) Plot the positions of the two objects on the x-y plane.

Hints:

Projectile velocity x-component: vx
Projectile velocity y-component: vy
Projetile speed: v = num.sqrt(vx*vx + vy*vy)
Retarding force: Ff = alpha*v
Retarding force x-component: Ffx = -Ff*vx/v
Retarding force y-component: Ffy = -Ff*vy/v
Distance between projectile and satellite: d = (x_projectile - 100)^2 + (y_projectile - y_satellite)^2

  if d < 1 :
    print("Hit! d=",d)
    break
  if x_projectile > 101 :
    print("Missed!")
    break

Example plot: (You do not have do draw the alien or the spacecraft.)
