**1764**Joseph Loise Lagrange discovers the divergence theorem.**1813**Karl Friedrich Gauss rediscovers the divergence theorem.**1828**George Green rediscovers the divergence theorem.**1831**Mikhail Vasilievich Ostrogradski rediscovers the divergence theorem.**1845**William Thomson, later to become Sir Kelvin, discovers Green's work and makes it well-known.**1850**Thomson writes about the curl version of the theorem in a letter to George Gabriel Stokes.**1854**Stokes asks for a proof of the curl version of the theorem in Question 8 of Smith's Prize exam.**1873**One of the student who took the exam, James Clerk Maxwell, includes the curl version of the theorem in his book, A Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism, and attributes it to Stokes.
