Abstract: The goal of this project is to explain the
use of some
mathematical tools to the problem of recognition of the harmonic structure of a
musical piece electronically recorded. First, the mathematical tools refer to
the Discrete Fourier Transform, the Fast Fourier Transform algorithm, and the
Hidden Markov Models are explained. After a short review of the musical theory
background referring to the harmonic structure of a musical piece and a review
of some signal processing concepts as spectrogram and chromagram,
an algorithm and a MATLAB code based on all these ingredients is presented.
