Abstract: This Spring, the Topology Seminar will explore Dwyer's theory of homology decompositions.  We will spend the first several weeks establishing background necessary for a rigorous treatment of the subject. We will begin next week with a refresher on the fundamental notion of simplicial sets, which will be our model for spaces throughout the semester.  We will describe the nerve construction that allows us to associate a space to a small category, as well as recall certain technical issues that arise when considering maps between simplicial sets. This basic talk will allow us to consider more advanced notions, like homotopy colimits, in the weeks ahead.
