Abstract: Intended for a general audience, I will start with an overview of the basic notions and concepts of coding theory, its relation to different fields of mathematics and some of the main research problems. I will then talk about the general properties of codes over rings, focusing on a recently introduced family of ring extensions of the binary field. The gray maps, the binary images are described with a focus on self-dual codes.  I will finish by stating some of the recent results about extremal binary self-dual codes that we have obtained by using codes over these rings.

Bio: Dr. Yıldız got his BS from Bilkent University in 2001 and his PhD from California Institute of Technology in 2006. He then joined Fatih University as an assistant professor. Currently he works as an associate professor in the math department of Fatih University. His research is mainly on algebraic coding theory and combinatorics.
