"Cyclic
Codes and Curves over Finite Fields"

Abstract: Two problems about cyclic
codes and their relations to curves over finite fields will be presented. One
of these is on bounding the minimum distance of arbitrary cyclic codes via the
number of rational points on Artin-Schreier type
curves (with F. Özbudak) and the other one is on the
weights of certain codes related to supersingular Artin-Schreier curves (with G. McGuire). Necessary
background will be given with the hope to make this accessible for general
audience.
Bio: Associate Professor of
Mathematics at Sabanci University. Recevied BS in
1995 from METU and PhD in 2001 from Louisiana State University. Research
topics: Algebraic curves over finite fields and their applications; algebraic
coding theory.
