"A new approach to the old problem of S. Kakutani on unification of ergodic averages and martingales. Some results and difficulties"
By
Abstract: A certain
similarity between convergence theorems for ergodic averages and for
martingales has been known since 1940s. This similarity led to the natural
conjecture that ergodic averages and martingales can be unified into a single
structure. Formally, the problem was posed by S. Kakutani in 1950. For the last
60 years, at least six different approaches to this problem have been proposed.
However, the problem has not been completely solved. In this talk, a new
approach to the Kakutani problem is discussed.
