“On the Simplicity of Some Classical Diffeomorphism Groups”

ABSTRACT: I will start with introducing some classical diffeomorphism
groups. Then I plan to discuss some techniques due to Thurston, Herman and
Banyaga that are used to show that some of these diffeomorphism groups or
their subgroups are simple or at least perfect.
