Department of Mathematics Invites Applications

To continue its expansion, the Mathematics Department will be offering positions at the level of Assistant Professorship to applicants with a very strong research background and a commitment to high quality teaching. Visiting positions are also available and extension of a visiting position may also be considered. The number of offers will depend on the quality of the candidates.

In all classes and seminars, the language is English.

The priorities of the Department are oriented towards research, both for its own sake, and also in recognition of the principle that a teacher's ability to nurture creativity depends fundamentally on the teacher's own creativity.

As a private university, Bilkent is able to award salaries that are heavily augmented in proportion to research performance (assessed, largely, according to the SCI ratings for the journals in which the papers appear, the sum smoothed over a four-year period to encourage concentration on long-term projects). The research record of the Department (per staff) is far above that of any other mathematics department in Turkey. Expenses are granted for at least one international conference per year.

The library currently subscribes to approximately 2800 journals, about 125 of them in mathematics. The University subscribes to MathSciNet, JSTOR,  and numerous e-journals and other e-resources; see Bilkent Library  and also Bilkent Computing Centre .

Two courses are to be given per semester (or equivalent student advisory or administrative duties).

The Department admits 30 undergraduates (20 of them receive full scholarships) and several new graduate students per year. In these small, elite classes, it is possible to take care of each student individually. The teaching is subject to minimal administrative constraints: for instance, the teacher will set and mark exams and schedule Midterms autonomously. Feedback is provided by evaluations from students.

Accommodation on campus is at a nominal charge (essentially, utilities bills).

The university has a large population of international staff (especially in the Bilkent University Symphony Orchestra and the English Language Department). A shopping complex, hypermarket and five-screen cinema are located near to the campus main entrance. (Films, in Turkish cinemas, are invariably shown with subtitles and original dialogue.) For more variety, frequent busses put Bilkent 25 minutes away from Ankara, where many international venues and institutions can be found.
