Former faculty member Cem Yalçın Yıldırım together with collaborator Dan Goldston from San Jose State University has made a very important progress toward the solution of the twin primes problem. Jean-Pierre Serre of the College de France in Paris has been named as the first winner of the Abel Prize.  Presented by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, the prize carries a cash award of 6 million Norwegian kroner (approximately US$816,000). Serre is honored "for playing a key role in shaping the modern form of many parts of mathematics, including topology, algebraic geometry and number theory." Has Poincaré Conjecture been proved ? A Russian mathematician is reporting that he has proved the Poincaré Conjecture, one of the most famous unsolved problems in mathematics. The mathematician, Dr. Grigori Perelman of the Steklov Institute of Mathematics of the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg, is describing his work in a series of papers, not yet completed.
