About Chemistry Department
Graduates from the Department of Chemistry continue their education with full scholarships at Bilkent University in Turkey, and at renowned universities in the United States, such as the University of California in Santa Barbara, the University of Chicago, Princeton University, MIT, Texas A&M University and Rutgers University. The department has currently 10 faculty members. It offersthree degree courses: Bachelor of Science (BSc), Masters of Science (MSc), PhD.
The chemistry undergraduate program admits 40 talented students each year. The Department of Chemistry assumes that all students willcontinue their education in Master and PhD programs.
Our goal is to train researchers according to international standards to become the chemists of the future. A strong background in physics and mathematics is the prerequisite tostudying the structure of matter at themolecular level. Undergraduate students take fundamental physics and mathematics courses in their first two years and quantum physics in their third year. Computer use is an integral part of all undergraduate courses. Beginning with the second year, students take Analytical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, and Physical Chemistry. These courses utilize computers, modern laboratories and innovative educational techniques. A summer internship at the end of the third year assists students in gaining valuable industrial experience. Similarly, a senior project during both semesters of the fourth year prepares students for a research environment. Technical and/or non-technical electives are available for students beginning in the second year.
