Surface Science and Catalysis Research Group

Surface science and catalysis research group is led by Assistant Prof. Emrah Ozensoy. The main focus of the Surface Science and Catalysis Research Group is to approach reactions occurring on surfaces from two dissimilar but complimentary perspectives in order to bridge the gap between traditional surface science and catalysis.

In the first of these approaches, the structure and the surface reactivity of realistic catalytic materials were synthesized and scrutinized under realistic conditions via numerous characterization techniques such as in-situ transmission FTIR, TPD, RGA, XRD, XPS, Raman Spectroscopy, DR-UV-vis Spectroscopy, SEM, TEM, EDX, BET surface area measurements.

In the second complementary approach, we investigate the atomically-resolved model systems (such as single crystals, ultrathin metal/metal-oxide films, bimetallic ordered films, nanoparticles on ultrathin films etc.) using highly sensitive surface science probes such as LEED, XPS, AES and TPD in order to elucidate structure-functionality relationships on atomically well-defined material surfaces.

We are currently interested in the following research topics: NOx Storage Reduction (NSR) catalysts, prevention of catalytic sulfur poisoning, alcohol production/transformation reactions on surfaces (in relevance to biodiesel applications) and design of novel materials for low-temperature CO oxidation (in relevance to clean hydrogen production for fuel cell applications).
